Free Models to 3D Print

WHERE TO FIND STL FILES FOR 3D PRINTING! As many of you know, I recently purchased an FDM 3D Printer (the Wizmaker P-1) as did many others who backed the same Kickstarter (it’s now available via retail). Some folks already have very specific plans for what they will be printing while some of us are completely new to 3D printing. I knew I would be printing miniatures for tabletop roleplaying games that I use in classes at the university and tons of other bits for personal and family use. In service to folks who may not know where to get…

Mind Melting Illusions

Let’s play a game . . . here are some fun mind melting optical illusions that you can play with. TIGER KITTY LOVES YOU WARPED CHAIR PEGASUS RUBIK’S CUBE GOES DIMENSIONAL ENDLESS CORRIDOR I’ve shared a variation of this one in a previous post but here it is in this megapost version. Cover the center part of the image and the corridor speeds up but cover the sides and the corridor slows down. ROLLERS SINK EYE COFFEE OWL VANISHING GIRL PERIPHERAL VISION Look at the cross, keep your eyes focused on that cross. Notice what happens to the faces of…

Ten Bets You’ll Probably Maybe Almost Never Lose

We say “almost,” because like many of the bets in Richard Wiseman’s earlier bar-trick videos, a few of these are liable to get you punched in the face. (I’m looking at you, #4. Ten to ten? Really?) That being said, some of these are actually pretty clever. Flipping your friend’s glass over so she can’t get to her drink relies on pressure and surface tension. Removing an ice cube with string is possible thanks to a phenomenon known as freezing point depression. (When the salt hits the ice it lowers the melting point of the solid, allowing the string to…

Pretending to be a Superhero could make You more Altruistic in Real Life

Can pretending to fly around like Superman inspire you to save the day? Does great power truly encourage great responsibility? A new study suggests that stepping into the role of a superhero in the virtual world could spark more helpful behavior in reality, at least briefly. The study, conducted at Stanford University and published this week in PLoS ONE, tested the whether experiencing superhuman abilities in video games could encourage prosocial behavior. The participants were divided into four groups, all of whom participated in a virtual reality simulation. Two of the groups played a person with the ability to fly…

Cards Against Humanity

Cards Against HUMANITY Cards Against Humanity is a rather unusual game. It is a bit of this and a bit of that but mostly insane but in a good way. It certainly earns its name but also in a good way. Admission, I do occasionally use this game in my English communication courses at the university, albeit I do remove the more disturbing cards (I’d like to keep my job so no sexually explicit content in the versions we play in class). The students even create their own cards for the game based upon a theme related to the university.…

Inspiring Creativity in the Classroom

Updating a post from a few years ago, on 26 December 2007, I presented a workshop on “Inspiring Creativity in the Classroom” to senior students in an elite English program at Taipei First Girls High School, the top girls high school in Taiwan. The program is an adaptation of one I have presented elsewhere in a number of continuing education and academic conference settings to working teachers and is comprised of improvisational language structures (which I have adapted from improvisational theatre games), guided imagery, and a brief introduction to hypnosis for stress reduction and study skills enhancement with an added…

Once Upon a Time with Wil Wheaton and Friends

In his Tabletop series on youtube, Wil Wheaton introduces ONCE UPON A TIME to Amy Berg, Mike Phirman, and Chris “Doc” Wyatt. The neat thing about the show is that they introduce games while actually playing. I love Once Upon a Time and use it every year in my communication courses at the university and the unit’s culmination is a project in which my students create their own variation decks for the game using their choice of genre and their own newly created vocabulary lists. Students then get a chance to play games using one another’s decks. Note that in…
